Superb Old Antique Conn Wonder Violin Elkhart Indiana 1925 4/4
A beautiful  1925 Conn Wonder violin. These violins were made from 1897 until the early 1930s. There were a total of 1200 of these violins made in Elkhart Indiana. These are collectible and sound superb! A video will be coming soon.
The sound of this violin is better than 95% of instruments we have ever had the pleasure of playing. Deep lower register and brilliant upper register with a large projecting open sound with mellow undertones that can only be achieved from an old instrument that is constructed well with good wood and having been played in for many many years.
History:
When C.G. Conn opened his Elkhart Indiana violin factory in the late 1800s he had purchased several 100 year old buildings in New York City and had them demolished. From those buildings he obtained enough old wood to make over 2000 violin tops. The wood in this violin came from one of those 100 year old buildings. This particular violin was constructed in 1925, and the wood was at least 100 years old before it was used in the building. That makes the wood in this violin closer to 300 years in age. And it sounds absolutely terrific!
Very even and consistent tone in all registers. Labelled internally. The label reads Elkhart, Ind. 1925. Beautiful varnish and wood selection.
Possibly the work of Frank Barstow. The two-piece maple back is of medium curl descending from left to right. The two-piece spruce table is of fine grain. The varnish is a reddish-orange brown color over golden ground. There is considerable crazing and crackling of the varnish making this one a very unique piece. Length of Back: 360 mm, Upper Bouts: 171 mm, Middle Bouts: 113 mm, Lower Bouts: 213 mm. Surely some marks in its sold brown varnish.
These violins are available in violin shops around the country and you can Google them. If they are set up properly like this one is they normally go between $4000 and $5,000. You can obtain this one for considerably less!
Will come completely set up with new strings and ready for play and shipped in its old case that is pictured. No bow included. Buy with confidence as we insure all of our instruments for the full purchase price.
